a month or so back i read a review in rolling stone about this comic book, called "Y: The Last Man." it said the series was wrapping up but that it had a fairly large following and will be made into a movie, possibly starring shia labeouf. it's about a plague that kills all the men of the world simultaneously...except for one guy, Yorick ("Y" therefore has a double meaning, both as in the chromosome and the lead character's name, clever, eh?). intrigued by the plot summary, i kept an eye out for it. a couple weeks ago i found a trade paperback (a collection of issues) of the first 5 issues at barnes and noble. i read through it in a couple of hours and was hooked. i passed it along to a friend who also got hooked. he found the remaining 55 issues online. over the course of the series, yorick yearns for finding his "true love" (who's on the other side of the world, on a research project), but realizes he has a responsibility to all humankind to figure out why he survived and that cloning is no longer a moral issue but necessary to keep the human species in existence. there's also some neo-amazonian women hellbent on destroying anything reminiscent of males all together, so when they get word of a male actually still alive, they set out to find him and kill him, led by his sister. to keep them at bay, and other unfriendly people aware of his existence, yorick, his body guard, and the biologist studying him and his pet monkey are always on the move, traveling across the country, eventually making it to europe.
surprisingly, the author keeps it relatively clean (definitely r-rated: quite a bit of blood and vulgarity, and some nudity) and doesn't make it pornographic or anywhere close.
i just finished up the series a few minutes ago. i must say, it left me wanting more. i was sad to see it end. however, it has renewed an interest in comic books that had been lost since i was 12 or so.

if you like that stuff you might want to check out what x-men has done recently...deadly genesis is pretty good...it all starts with m-day and you can start with that if you want but if not go to endangered species...they pretty much tell you the whole idea...but it is turning pretty gritty...also check out joss whedon's run on uncanny x-men...you will find that a lot of tv series writers started out in comics... also if you got time at work go to newsarama.com...it does movie revues comics both big and small...it is great if you have some time to kill...and if you want o talk i got back into them about two years ago...

Excellent Casey. Yeah, I've been into comics since my senior year in HS, though over the last year I've been getting out of them (too expensive). Anyway, I read the first TPB (trade paperback) of Y about two and half years ago. I went ahead and bought the 2nd and 3rd TPB, but didn't read them (mostly due to lack of time, though it's not really an excuse).
There are plenty of 'intellectual' comics out there nowadays. I suggest checking out Watchmen (Alan Moore) or Sandman (Neil Gaiman). I haven't read the former, but heard great things about it (it's on my list). I've read most of Sandman (which is excellent). Anyway, reading in general is awesome. BTW, I like comicbookresources.com for comic related stuff.- [ 2008.03.31 | 11:02:20am ]

awesome! thanks guys! I've heard of Watchmen and I think it's gonna be 2nd on my list. I've been meaning to get and read through the Sin City books for a while now--I think it's gonna take precedence. I've also heard some pretty cool stuff about "Wanted"--it will probably be 3rd. I got the first TPB (I like that abbreviation) of "The Walking Dead" which has a great concept (a guy wakes up to find himself surrounded by zombies and the story sets off from there), but the dialogue in it was poorly written. I might try to continue it, but I didn't get hooked, so it will fall far down the line somewhere.
i really like the finite comic books, as opposed to the soap opera sagas. what style(s) are dead genesis and endangered species?- [ 2008.03.31 | 12:22:10pm ]
