you know what really freakin' annoys me? i have my google preferences set to open my search results in a new window. so when i do a search i click on the first link, it opens in a new window...great! i go back to the search results window and i click on another link - but that link opens up in the same new window as the first - essentially negating the fact that i opened the first link in a new window. ARRRRRGH!! why do you do this to me google?
I especially hate it when i'm using firefox [99% of the time]. i'll have a window open with a google search for one topic and a new tab opened for one of the results. I'll open up a second window, do a google search for second topic, click a link, and the same new tab for the first result - in the other window - will change to the page that i clicked on in the second google search. W-T-F google??

Sorry, but you're just a cry-baby for this one. For new windows, I'll just right click + *Gasp* + click "open in new window". If I want to open anything from there in a new window I do the same. If I want to open in a new tab, I just click the wheel mouse (note: I don't alter my mouse functions). So, I'd just say suck it up... Note that Google doesn't have control of what is a new window. Rather, I'd *blame* FF or the W3C people for the fact that there are only a few "a" tags for target: _parent, _blank, _self, and _top.

nemo's right. It isn't Google's fault that the browser doesn't handle new windows the way it is supposed to, or the way you prefer it to. I also am a big fan of the "Open in new window" or tab menu command. Even better than right clicking though is ctrl+clicking to open in a new tab, shift+clicking to open in a new window, and alt+clicking to save the link, in Ff that is.

no...if you set target="_blank" it will open a new window - not reuse a previously opened window. google's coding actually forces the previously opened window to be reused. i can create a demo page if you need a proof-of-concept.

I still think that you're just whiny. I think the default should be to always open in the same window. Bam! Now you have to use ctrl + click, mouse wheel click, etc. to open it a different way... :P

in fx, you can also middle-click to open in a new tab--i'm sure there's an extension, or some other way, to set the middle click force a new window.

middle clicking isn't going to work for me since i've remapped my wheel button to be a double-click.
here's the gist of the problem that i'm having: i have my google preferences set to open a new window. say i have window 1 with a google search for term 1. so i click on a link in the google search for term 1 to open result page 1 (thanks to tab mix plus, it opens in a new tab instead of a new window). then, i get tasked at work with another issue. i open window 2, perform another google search for term 2. i click on a link in this separate window, with a separate google search, and result page 1 (from window 1) now becomes result page 2.
did google open a new window (tab) like it claims in its preferences? no. google has just taken a crap on my productivity - because, now, i have to change windows, click 'back' in result page 2 to go back to result page 1, switch windows again and re-click the link while holding 'ctrl' to open a new tab in in window 2.
i've had plenty of experience in [X]HTML, JavaScript, and web design. i know that there is one way to accomplish this. google assigns a name to the new window (tab) that it opened for result page 1. when it goes to open result page 2, their code specifically requests for the page to be opened in the window (tab) titled: [whatever the name was for result page 1]. they had to manually code that functionality in there. it's not a malfunction of the browser - it's an intended result.
could i just hold down 'ctrl' when i click a link from google? sure, but that's not what i want to have to do. i use google enough to where i would love to be able to open as many result pages as i want in as many new tabs as i want without having to take extra steps to accomplish this.
maybe i am being whiny. but i feel like i have a right to be mildly upset over google's misuse/mislabeling of the "open in a new window" preference setting. it's frustrating to me that it's functionality doesn't match it's claims - especially when it's claims are exactly what i want!!
