2005.10.04
- i'm disgusted at how today's society views marriage as semi-permanent dating.

one of the most sickening things for me to hear is "...and if it doesn't work out, we can just get a divorce."

for real. marriage, from what i understand, means "til death do us part"... not "until i see a girl with a tighter butt"...

yeah, or "until we realize that we don't always get along"...

Love is a choice. Period.
It is not something you fall into or out of. It is not something that happens to you. It has nothing to do with circumstances, happiness, sex, or anything other than an intellectual decision.
That not to say there are not reasons to choose to stop loving someone as a married couple should love one another. There certainly are. Not being happy, excited, satisfied, displeased, nor any other emotion qualifies as a reason.
The reason marriage is a viable institution is because love is a choice.- [ 2005.10.05 | 3:13:28pm ]

i wholeheartedly disagree. i think love is too strong of an emotion to be retracted if you're just "not happy". i think that too many people confuse 'love' with 'a strong attraction'. i think that if people divorce because they're "not happy", they never really loved each other in the first place.- [ 2005.10.07 | 11:52:05am ]

I think love is too strong of a decision to be retracted if you're just "not happy." But, since it is a choice, it can and does happen.
i think that too many people confuse 'love' with 'a strong attraction'
I completely agree. Hence my "love is a choice" rant.
I work face to face on a regular basis with couples that have been married for 50+ years. None of them ever talk about feelings. It's always about
commitment to their vows (choosing to love despite circumstances) and putting the other person first.
i think that if people divorce because they're "not happy", they never really loved each other in the first place.
I disagree. Too many exceptions and too romantic to be a rule. I believe they are simply changing their mind based on their circumstances, and that always ends badly.- [ 2005.10.08 | 12:00:41am ]

Love is a feeling. Commitment is a decision. Staying together means making choices based on commitment. Marriages that fall apart are ones in which the people make choices based solely on Love (or rather, the lack of Love when they're not feeling it). It's what happens when you let your emotions control you. AKA Follow your heart. pfffft. Who made that up anyway? Probably someone who was justifying their failed marriage.
"All ya need is love." bap-badada-WRONG!!!!- [ 2005.10.11 | 8:18:28am ]

you're right, ryan. to add to that, i think true love will inspire commitment.

i do believe a can of worms hath been openith...i agree with love being a choice...marriage is a choice..granted their are chemicals and things that happen to cause attraction and hormons that are ignited but it comes down to that choice...i will say that my goal upon getting married is to randomly give my wife a new reason to love me...a new reason to want to be with me...coming from someone whos parents divorced after 20 years of marriage and what that does to the mind of an 18 year old and his veiws on relationships, i say divorce is not an option...the only way out of a marriage with me is to kill me...and if it ever got that dull in my marrage trying to kill me would defiantly give me new motivation to make it work...
